PROGRAM DETAILS

Upon the completion of the CanSkate program, STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. It teaches these skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada tests through a nationally standardized testing system.

JumpStart - is intended to introduce and fast track new skaters coming out of CanSkate who are interested in figure skating to the STARskate program. Minimum requirement is completion of Canskate level 4, 5 or 6 or skaters at the STAR 1 level with recommendation by a club professional. Participants are required to wear figure skates (no hockey style skates). Skaters participate in group lessons for a specified time with a Club Professional. The cost of these lessons is included in the registration fee. In addition to group lessons provided, parents may hire a coach for private lessons if they wish. Though encouraged for further progression and instruction time, there is no obligation or requirement to do so. If private lessons are taken during group time, they should not interfere with or disrupt the progress of the group lesson. The skater may leave for a private lesson and rejoin the group session. However, the Club Professional may not be able to reiterate the missed portion. Skaters may take private lessons on a non-jumpstart time for the duration of the lesson. A skater is eligible to advance to the Junior Level upon recommendation by the Club Professional or having completed the STAR 1 level.

Skaters are expected to attend their off classes as part of their training.  These are included in your registration fee. Private lessons are booked directly with the coach of your choosing. See our link under Coaches for more information.

PROGRAM DETAILS

CanSkate is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages (note below restrictions and requirements for the 2020-2021 Season).  Canskate focuses on fun, participation, and basic skill development. Skaters earn badges and ribbons as they learn fundamental skating skills through balance, control, and agility. Lessons are given in a group format and led by a certified professional coach(s). The professional coach is assisted by Program Assistants (PAs). PAs are skaters in our Club who have been trained to instruct under the supervision of the Club Professional. These skaters volunteer their time to assist in the successful operation of the CanSkate program.

Parent Assisted Canskate is for all participants (past participants or new) that either CANNOT STAND OR MOVE ON THEIR OWN or who can stand and move on their own BUT CANNOT follow directions or understand the process of physical distancing (particularly children under the age of 5yrs) or CANNOT remain in the facility alone without a parent. For our Unassisted Canskate Program, participants MUST be able to STAND, MOVE and follow Instructions on their own, as well, they MUST understand the rules of physical distancing. Registration as a parent/guardian assistant must be completed at time of participant registration. PROGRAM DETAILS

Senior Starskate is intended for skaters who have completed all of STAR 3 or upon recommendation by an SPSC Club Professional and approval of the Club Board. Skaters participate in group lessons for a specified time with a Club Professional. The cost of these lessons is included in the registration fee. In addition to group lessons provided, parents may hire a coach for private lessons. Though encouraged for further progression and instruction time, there is no obligation or requirement. Note: A private coach is required to complete official assessments at this level. If private lessons are taken during group time, they should not interfere with or disrupt the progress of the group lesson. The skater may leave for a private lesson and rejoin the group session. However, the Club Professional may not be able to reiterate the missed portion.
Senior skaters are expected to exhibit the maturity and responsibility to work independently when they are not under the direction of their coach. While they are working toward their goals, they find time to make friends and have fun but in doing so must not disrupt other skaters progress and practice. Skaters are expected to attend off-ice classes as part of their training. This is included in your registration fee.
