CANSKATE IS THE LEARN TO SKATE PROGRAM WHICH ALL OTHERS ARE MEASURED AGAINST.

CanSkate offers the best curriculum in Canada. This flagship learn-to-skate program has taught millions of Canadians to reach their recreational and competitive goals on the ice.

The CanSkate program is geared to beginners of all ages…children, adults, newcomers to Canada and athletes with a disability (AWAD). Whether you are looking to improve basic skating skills for figure skating,  hockey, ringette or speed skating, or  wish to skate for recreation, fitness or fun, CanSkate will get you there.

Conducted in a fun, friendly environment, the CanSkate program showcases a comprehensive series of balance, control and agility skills, using a nationally-tested and proven curriculum that supports skater success in developing stronger basic skills on the ice.

Millions of Canadians, including World and Olympic figure skating champions and National Hockey League stars, have taken their first steps on the ice with the CanSkate program. The program is delivered by NCCP coaches with delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster. CanSkate will help you realize your skating goals.

The CanSkate program is based on Sport Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles. The  program also includes specific skills that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating. The result is a dynamic  program that prepares all skaters for virtually every ice sport.

Sherwood Parkdale Skating Club is pleased to offer the best CanSkate - Learn to Skate programs available. We offer four groups:  Canskate is recommended for children aged 3yrs  and older for all levels (stage 1 - 6); Parent Assisted Canskate recommended for children who are brand new to skating starting from age 3 or returning skaters who cannot stand, move on their own or do not want to go on the ice without mom or dad;  We also offer Advanced Canskate for skaters working on stage 3 - 6 and Sledge Canskate. There are more details on Sledge Canskate on the Sledge Canskate drop down menu. All Canskate programs run for 45minutes in length. All programs are run by Professional Coaches through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). With our on-line system you will be able to log into your family account and track your child's progress in real time!

CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program at entry level for all ages that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. After mastering the basics there are many options available.

 

What will you learn?

A complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.

What can you expect?

Action, movement and fun! Lessons are given in a group format with a coach-to-student ratio of a maximum 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning. Badges, ribbons and other incentives are used to benchmark skaters’ progress and reward effort and participation.

What do you need to participate?

All you need are skates, a CSA-approved hockey helmet, long pants, mittens, warm sweater or jacket. Dress in layers – it will get warm!
